- Using a slightly oblong watermelon, slice ¼ inch off the bottom lengthwise to provide a stable base. Use a pencil to trace out the outline of a car, including convertible top, doors, wheels and hood.
- Cut out the top portion of the watermelon, which will be used to create the windshield, bumpers, surfboard, and convertible back piece.
- Next, cut out bottom half of wheels, and then cut out the remaining bottom of watermelon to form the undercarriage of car.
- Use a paring knife to trace the detail lines for hood and doors. Then make the lines extra wide so they are visible from a distance. Use a channel knife to detail the rest of the wheel line, and to add the hubcap notches.
- Next, use a melon baller to make headlight holes, and fill each with a round peach piece, attached with small piece of a toothpick.
- Scoop out the remaining flesh inside the melon, and cut into squares for fruit salad.
- Use the carved out top section to cut a windshield, which can be peeled to make a lighter green. Attach with sturdy, round toothpicks.
- Cut the rounded end piece and turn upside down to use as back of convertible. Attach with toothpicks.
- Use remaining rind pieces to carve out bumpers and surfboard, and attach each with toothpicks.
- Fill with watermelon pieces, and accent with grapes, sliced peaches, and nectarines.
